Human Resources

Human Resource Development has been a significant challenge in the field of Deafblindness. The scarcity of professionals catering to the unique needs of this population was the major hindrance to the overall development of this population. This has led to the isolation of both individuals with Multiple Disabilities including Deafblindness and their families.

The groundbreaking collaborative effort between the Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deafblind, Sense International (India), and Rangoonwala Foundation (India) Trust, led to the foundation of the first-ever teacher training programme for the Deafblind in India and South East Asia in the year 2000. This marked a new era, breaking the isolation for children with multiple disabilities, including Deafblindness

The duration of the course is 2 years. It is designed to provide intensive theoretical input and practical orientation in terms of hands-on experience with children and young adults with Multiple disabilities including Deafblindness. The program is recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

The curriculum encompasses Extensive theoretical inputs by faculties of the Institute as well as by guest faculties from different organizations in the disability sector in India and abroad.

The holistic approach of the training helps to create professionals to address the diverse needs of children and young adults with Multiple Disabilities including Deafblindness across different age groups and levels, through various service delivery models.

It fosters the development of knowledge, skills, and desirable attitudes, enabling learners to flourish.

The trainees learn to assess, teach, train, manage and advocate for children/adults with multiple disabilities including Deafblindness and partner with families.

We have successfully trained over 300 professionals who are now actively serving in NGOs, government organizations and even in some South East Asian countries.

Moreover, parents and siblings have also taken part in the course and are making valuable contributions to the field, with some even starting their own organizationThe teacher training centre of Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deafblind received the Sense International (India) Jagdish Patel Award in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the deafblind sector in the Asian region.
