Early Intervention

Children who are Deafblind or have multiple disabilities with visual impairment face challenges in all areas of development, including acquisition of information from the environment, communication and social-emotional growth.

These children rarely experience incidental learning and must be given specific guidance and support on how to manage their interactions with their environment.

Educational Services

Since 1977, we have been actively engaged in the field of education and global development, catering to learners who are Deaf, Deafblind, and Multiple Disabilities with Vision Impairment.

Our approach to education for children and youth with Deafblindness / Multiple Disabilities with Vision Impairment is highly personalized, recognizing that they have limited channels for learning. We design individualized programs for each learner, addressing their unique ways of learning and interests.

Vocational Training

At HKIDB, we firmly believe that work or employment is a crucial step towards the rehabilitation and empowerment of individuals with disabilities.

Engaging in vocational training provides a sense of belonging, independence, and fosters social inclusion and overall well-being for our beneficiaries.

Our Vocational Training Unit aims to equip learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for successful job performance.

Therapeutic services

Many children with Deafblindness may have additional disabilities, which further complicates their situation. They may exhibit an aversion to touch, experience disrupted sleeping patterns, suffer from overall poor health, and encounter feeding difficulties. They may repeatedly seek strong sensory stimulation through specific channels or display unusual postures and distractibility.

Counselling Session and Workshop for Parents

Often, following the birth of a child with disability parents undergo various emotional phases as they adapt to this new reality, which might have impacted their aspirations, dreams, and way of life.

In the midst of their initial thoughts, they find themselves questioning, “Why is this happening to us?” as they grapple with unexpected and overwhelming emotions. They feel the need for reassurance to cope with the situation.

Computerized Mini Braille press

HKIDB ensures that Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) are independent and self-reliant by empowering them . At the HKIDB’s  Braille Press we have skilled staff who are PwDs where we offer services like Certification of Medical cartons embossed in Braille, printing of Braille books and calendars, Braille Advocacy materials, visiting cards with or without braille, printing of tactile books for educating the students with vision impairment and Deafblindness.

Human Resources

Human Resource Development has been a significant challenge in the field of Deafblindness. The scarcity of professionals catering to the unique needs of this population was the major hindrance to the overall development of this population. This has led to the isolation of both individuals with Multiple Disabilities including Deafblindness and their families.

Mentoring services and capacity building

One of the primary focuses of HKIDB is to build the capacity of parents, caregivers, special educators from partner organizations (including those in certain Southeast Asian countries), and para-medical professionals, among others. Our goal is to support them in understanding the specific needs of children and young adults with Multiple Disabilities including Deafblindness.
